*Houghton Mifflin Series and supplemental materials
*Daily homework should take between 15-20 minutes.
*Notes are recorded in math notebook to use as a homework resource. Lessons can also be referenced on this site.
*Fractions will be a major focus in 5th grade.
Independent Reading
*45-60 minutes independent reading within school day, including fiction and nonfiction text.
*Students are required to read independently at home 30 minutes minimum as part of nightly homework.
*AR- comprehension & vocabulary based program. Four points are required each week. Student read self selected, appropriate books.
*The fifth grade goal is 150 points.
Literacy
*Students will participate in skill based whole group lessons, small group instruction, shared reading, and individual conferences.
*There is an increased emphasis on citing the text to support and justify inferences.
*Writing will focus on informational texts, including a research project, persuasive writing, and organizing writing using different text structures.
*Grammar

Ecosystems, Weather, Human Body Systems, Forces & Motion
*There is an increased focus on reading scientific text to help prepare for 5th grade science EOG.
*Supplies: 3 clear two liter bottles (not the new coke bottles).
*There will be vocabulary assessments for each unit.
*Students may create Powerpoints as a study tool.
*Science Fair will be the evening of Math and Science Night.
Social Studies
*Harcourt Program
*Study of North American history and structure of government.
*US States and Capitals will be studied after EOGs.
Transportation
*Be sure to check for changes in your child’s bus route!
*Please send a note with your child if he/she has a change in their normal transportation.
*Use same car rider sign as last year, replacement signs can be purchased in the front office.
* Car rider lines starts at 3:40*
Friday Folders
*Folders will come home weekly.
*Please review the work for the week and sign sheet in folder.
*Folders are a great opportunity for you to keep up to date with your child’s progress.
Volunteers
*Throughout the year we will need chaperones for field trips, helpers for Fall Festival and Field Day.
*You must register and receive a Green Star to be a volunteer for any school related event.
*You may register after July 1st to be a volunteer.
